Jeep unveiled the 2027 Wrangler Smoky Mountain on August 20, 2026 at the Smoky Mountain Invasion in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It is a four-door special edition built on the Wrangler Willys, and it is the tenth entry in the Twelve 4 Twelve series. For Jacksonville drivers the useful part is not the decals. It is the hardware underneath: steel rock rails, Dana 44 axles front and rear, a locking rear differential, a 4.10 axle ratio and a trailer hitch, all standard.
What Jeep Announced
The reveal happened at an event, not at an auto show, and that is the whole point of this edition.
The Jeep brand announced the 2027 Wrangler Smoky Mountain on August 20, 2026, on the ground at the 14th annual Smoky Mountain Invasion in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Jeep puts the gathering at close to 50,000 people and 20,000 Jeep vehicles.
The vehicle is built on the four-door Wrangler Willys. Jeep offers it with either the 2.0L automatic or the 3.6L automatic powertrain. There is no two-door version.
The exterior gets Smoky Mountain hood-side decals drawn from mountain peaks, 17-inch smoky black wheels, a gloss black seven-slot grille, and a body-color hardtop and fender flares. Tires are 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrains as standard, with 35-inch KO2s available.
Inside, Jeep uses premium Black Ferndale cloth seats with an embossed 1941 Willys parachute graphic, Terracotta stitching, metallic Blaze Orange accents, and a gray metallic shifter medallion with a mama bear and cub on it. Heated seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and a garage door opener are standard.

The Wrangler Willys is the base the Smoky Mountain is built on. Photo shows a current 2026 Willys, not the 2027 Smoky Mountain.
Steel rock rails
Standard on this edition. They take the hit on a rock or a stump so the body sills do not.
Dana 44 axles, front and rear
The heavier-duty axle set, standard here rather than optional. It is what lets a Wrangler run bigger tires without complaint.
Locking rear differential
Sends power to both rear wheels instead of the one with the least grip. That is the difference between climbing out of soft sand and digging into it.
4.10 axle ratio and a trailer hitch
Both standard. The 4.10 ratio is the same gearing that matters when a four-door Wrangler is set up to pull a trailer.
What a Twelve 4 Twelve Edition Actually Is
Plain English, because "tenth installment in the Twelve 4 Twelve series" tells a buyer nothing on its own.
Twelve 4 Twelve is a run of limited-edition Wranglers Jeep is releasing around the brand's anniversary. Each one is tied to a piece of Jeep history or to a specific enthusiast gathering. They are not new models, and they are not a redesign. Each is an appearance and equipment package layered on top of an existing Wrangler trim, built in limited numbers.
That matters for two practical reasons. First, the underlying vehicle is one we already order and stock, so the mechanical picture is familiar and the service department already works on it. Second, limited numbers means allocation decides who gets one, not how long you are willing to wait.
The Sarge is the one this market usually asks about
Jeep revealed the 2027 Wrangler Sarge on June 12, 2026, as the eighth entry in the same series. It is the military-heritage one: 41 Green paint, a military star graphic on the doors, vintage hood graphics, bronze tow hooks, 17-inch wheels in matching 41 Green, and a two-tone Drab Green and Cattle Tan interior. The reference point is the 1941 Willys MB.
In a town wrapped around Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River, that is usually the edition people bring up first. The Sarge is also offered in both two-door and four-door form, on Willys and Rubicon trims, where the Smoky Mountain is four-door only. If you want a two-door heritage Wrangler, the Sarge is the one to ask about.
Neither edition changes what a Wrangler tows or how it drives. For that, see our full Wrangler towing chart by trim or the Wrangler trim comparison.

Factory off-road hardware on a current 2026 Wrangler. The Twelve 4 Twelve editions layer trim and equipment on top of this, not a new platform.
Why It Matters in Jacksonville and Onslow County
Car and Driver is never going to write the Onslow County version of this story. Here it is.
The standard hardware is the part that survives our conditions
Eastern North Carolina is not rock crawling country. What it is, is salt air, soft sand, wet clay and standing water after a storm. That is a different test, and it is one where the boring items on the spec sheet do the work. Steel rock rails matter on a rutted forest road, not just on a ledge. A locking rear differential is what gets a vehicle off a soft shoulder on Gum Branch Road when one wheel is spinning.
Where people around here actually use it
The Croatan National Forest starts a short run east of Jacksonville and carries the Black Swamp OHV trail plus a network of Forest Service roads. It is the closest real off-pavement use most local Wranglers ever see, and 33-inch all-terrains with proper axles are more than enough for it.
The other one is the beach. The Town of Emerald Isle allows four-wheel-drive beach driving with a town-issued permit, and the season runs September 15 through April 30. That is roughly 35 minutes down NC-24 from N Marine Blvd, and it is why the locking rear differential on this edition is worth more here than the decals are.
The honest caveat about a special edition in a salt-air town
Body-color hardtops and fender flares look sharp on a lot. Sand and salt spray are hard on any vehicle finish, and a limited-run color combination is harder to source panels for later. That is not a reason to skip it. It is a reason to rinse the undercarriage after beach runs, which our service department on N Marine Blvd will tell you the same way.
What Happens Next, and What We Do Not Know Yet
The part where most dealer pages guess. We are not going to.
- Ordering is open. Jeep opened orders on the Smoky Mountain with the August 20 announcement.
- No build or delivery date has been announced. Jeep's release does not give one, and neither will we. A promised arrival date generates a phone call our salespeople cannot answer.
- Allocation is the real constraint. Twelve 4 Twelve editions are built in limited numbers. On past limited runs, whether a specific store gets one has come down to allocation rather than order timing.
- Ask us the day you are curious. What we know about allocation changes week to week. Call (910) 347-3777 and we will tell you what the current picture is rather than what it was when this page was written.
If the special edition is not the point and the hardware is, a standard four-door Willys gets you the Dana 44 axles and 33-inch tires without waiting on an allocation. Browse Wrangler inventory and call to confirm which trims are on the ground this week.
Questions Jacksonville Jeep Owners Are Asking
What is the 2027 Jeep Wrangler Smoky Mountain?
It is a four-door Wrangler special edition built on the Willys trim, unveiled by Jeep on August 20, 2026 at the Smoky Mountain Invasion in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It is the tenth entry in the Twelve 4 Twelve Wrangler series. Jeep gives it Smoky Mountain hood-side decals, 17-inch smoky black wheels, a gloss black seven-slot grille, body-color hardtop and fender flares, steel rock rails, Dana 44 front and rear axles, a locking rear differential, a 4.10 axle ratio and a trailer hitch.
Is the Smoky Mountain edition a two-door or a four-door?
Four-door only. Jeep offers it on four-door Wrangler models with either the 2.0L automatic or the 3.6L automatic powertrain. If you want a two-door heritage Wrangler, the 2027 Wrangler Sarge is the one to look at, because Jeep offers that edition in both two-door and four-door form.
When will a Smoky Mountain Wrangler reach a dealership in Jacksonville, NC?
Jeep has opened ordering but has not announced a build or delivery date for any specific dealership, so we are not going to invent one. Twelve 4 Twelve editions are built in limited numbers, which usually means allocation matters more than calendar timing. Call us at (910) 347-3777 and we will tell you exactly what we know about allocation the day you ask.
What is the Twelve 4 Twelve series?
It is Jeep's run of limited-edition Wranglers built around the brand's anniversary, each one tied to a piece of Jeep history or to a specific enthusiast gathering. The Smoky Mountain is the tenth. The Wrangler Sarge, revealed on June 12, 2026, was the eighth and is the one built around the 1941 Willys MB military heritage.
Which Twelve 4 Twelve edition suits a Camp Lejeune buyer better?
That depends on which history you want on the vehicle. The Sarge is the military-heritage entry, finished in 41 Green with a door star graphic and Drab Green and Cattle Tan interior materials that trace directly back to the 1941 Willys MB. The Smoky Mountain is the trail-community entry, built around an enthusiast gathering rather than a service history. Both ride on Trail Rated hardware.
Can I still order a regular Wrangler Willys instead?
Yes. The Smoky Mountain is an appearance and equipment package layered onto the Willys, so the underlying vehicle is one we stock and order regularly. If you like the Willys hardware and not the decals, order the Willys. Browse our current Wrangler inventory or call and we will walk you through what is on the ground on N Marine Blvd today.
