A four-door Jeep Wrangler tows 3,500 lbs on most trims when properly equipped. A four-door Rubicon or Rubicon X with the eight-speed automatic and the 4.10 axle ratio tows 5,000 lbs. Every two-door tows 2,000 lbs.
Full chart below, plus the three build choices that decide which number you actually get. Figures read from Jeep's published 2026 Wrangler specifications on September 8, 2026.
Four-Door Wrangler Towing Capacity by Trim
The four-door is the one to buy if towing is on the list. Nine of the ten four-door trims land on the same number, and one build reaches higher.
| Trim | Engines offered | Max towing |

| Sport | 3.6L V6 or 2.0L turbo | 3,500 lbs |
| Sport S | 3.6L V6 or 2.0L turbo | 3,500 lbs |
| Willys | 3.6L V6 or 2.0L turbo | 3,500 lbs |
| Willys '41 | 3.6L V6 or 2.0L turbo | 3,500 lbs |

Two-Door Wrangler Towing Capacity
Short answer: it does not vary. Sport, Sport S, Willys, Rubicon and Rubicon X all carry the same rating in two-door form.
| Trim | Wheelbase | Max towing |
|---|---|---|
| Sport | 96.8 in | 2,000 lbs |
| Sport S | 96.8 in | 2,000 lbs |
| Willys | 96.8 in | 2,000 lbs |
| Rubicon | 96.8 in | 2,000 lbs |
| Rubicon X | 96.8 in | 2,000 lbs |
The 85th Anniversary Edition, Willys '41, Sahara, Rewind, Willys 392 and Moab 392 are four-door only for 2026, so they do not appear here.
Three Build Choices That Decide the Number
Two Wranglers can sit side by side on the same lot with different tow ratings. Here is what separates them.
1. Doors
This is the biggest single factor. The two-door runs a 96.8-inch wheelbase, the four-door 118.4 inches. Those extra 21.6 inches between the axles are worth 1,500 lbs of rating on the same basic chassis.
2. Transmission
The 5,000 lb rating requires the eight-speed automatic. A Rubicon ordered with the six-speed manual does not reach it, no matter which engine is in front of it.
3. Axle ratio
The 4.10 rear axle ratio is the third requirement. Gearing decides how hard the driveline works to move a load, which is why an axle code changes a tow rating and a horsepower figure does not.
Then check the hitch
The factory trailer tow package needs to be on the vehicle. An aftermarket receiver bolted to a Wrangler that was not built for the load does not raise anything except your risk.
Why the V8 392 Does Not Tow More
This is the question we get asked at the counter more than any other. The Willys 392 and Moab 392 carry the 6.4L HEMI V8, rated at 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Jeep still publishes 3,500 lbs for both.
Towing capacity on a Wrangler is a chassis and stability limit, not a power limit. Gross vehicle weight rating, axle ratio, wheelbase and brakes set the ceiling. The V8 trims also ride on 35-inch tires and heavier hardware, which eats into the margin the rating is calculated from.
The practical result is worth saying plainly: a properly equipped four-door Rubicon with the 2.0L turbo four-cylinder outtows both V8 Wranglers by 1,500 lbs. If towing is the reason you are shopping, the axle code matters more than the engine badge.
If you need more than 5,000 lbs, a Wrangler is the wrong tool. A Jeep Gladiator or a RAM 1500 is where that conversation goes, and we will point you there rather than sell you a Wrangler that cannot do the job.

The four-door Rubicon is the Wrangler that reaches 5,000 lbs, and only with the eight-speed automatic and the 4.10 axle.
What 3,500 lbs Actually Pulls Around Onslow County

A four-door Sahara. Rated at 3,500 lbs, which covers most small-boat and utility-trailer work on the coast.
Around here the tow question is usually a boat, a utility trailer, or a PCS move. Each one behaves differently.
Small boats. A jon boat or a skiff on a single-axle trailer sits comfortably inside a four-door Wrangler's rating. A mid-size center console on a tandem trailer is where it gets tight, because the number climbs fast once you add fuel, batteries, a full cooler and gear. Weigh the loaded rig rather than trusting the hull weight from the brochure.
Utility and equipment trailers. Read the trailer's own GVWR plate, not the empty weight. A 7x14 trailer with a mower and fuel cans on it is heavier than most people guess.
PCS moves. Rental trailer companies set their own tow-vehicle rules, and those rules are stricter than the vehicle's rating in some cases. Check with the rental counter before you plan around a number from this page.
The ramp is the real test. Pulling out at Swansboro or Cedar Point means an uphill start on a wet, sometimes slick surface. That is where the locking rear differential and the axle ratio earn their keep, not on the flat run down NC-24.
For the wider explanation of hitch classes, tongue weight and GCWR, we keep a plain-language guide to towing terminology. And if you want the same chart for a three-row SUV, see our Dodge Durango towing chart by engine and trim.
Do not tow to a chart. Tow to the sticker.
This page is accurate for the 2026 Wrangler as Jeep publishes it. It is still a chart. The vehicle you are actually buying has a build sheet with its transmission, axle ratio and tow package listed on it, and that document beats every article on the internet including this one. Ask us to pull it by VIN before you commit. Call (910) 347-3777 and we will read it with you.
Wrangler Towing Questions From Jacksonville Buyers
How much can a Jeep Wrangler tow?
A four-door Wrangler tows 3,500 lbs on most trims when properly equipped. A four-door Rubicon or Rubicon X built with the eight-speed automatic and the 4.10 axle ratio tows 5,000 lbs, which is the highest rating in the lineup. Every two-door Wrangler tows 2,000 lbs. Those figures come from Jeep's own published specifications for the 2026 Wrangler.
Why does a two-door Wrangler tow so much less than a four-door?
Wheelbase. The two-door rides on a 96.8-inch wheelbase and the four-door on 118.4 inches. A longer wheelbase resists the side-to-side push a trailer puts on the tow vehicle, so the same basic chassis is rated to pull more with the extra 21.6 inches between the axles. It is a stability limit, not an engine limit.
Does the V8 Wrangler 392 tow more than a four-cylinder Wrangler?
No. The Willys 392 and Moab 392 carry the 6.4L HEMI V8 with 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and Jeep still rates them at 3,500 lbs. Towing capacity on a Wrangler is set by chassis, axle ratio and stability, not by how much power the engine makes. A properly equipped four-door Rubicon with the 2.0L turbo outtows both V8 trims.
What does properly equipped mean for a Wrangler tow rating?
For the 5,000 lb rating it means a four-door Rubicon or Rubicon X with the eight-speed automatic transmission, the 4.10 rear axle ratio and the factory trailer hitch. Change any one of those and the rating drops. This is why two Rubicons on the same lot can carry different tow ratings, and why the window sticker on the specific vehicle is the only answer that counts.
Can a Jeep Wrangler tow a boat to the Intracoastal?
A four-door Wrangler handles most small skiffs and jon boats without argument. Where it gets tight is a mid-size center console on a tandem trailer, because the rig weight climbs quickly once you add fuel, batteries, a cooler of ice and gear. Weigh the loaded trailer rather than trusting the hull weight on the brochure, and remember the ramp pull at Swansboro or Cedar Point is uphill on a wet surface.
How do I find the tow rating of a specific Wrangler on your lot?
Ask us to pull the build sheet by VIN. It lists the transmission, the axle ratio and whether the trailer tow package is on the vehicle, which is everything the rating depends on. Call (910) 347-3777 or come to 2223 N Marine Blvd and we will read it with you rather than quoting a number off a chart.
