Take care of your tires at National CDJR

Routine maintenance is an essential part of owning any vehicle. And if you're like many Ram truck drivers, your truck is your prized possession, so you want to take care of it. However, one maintenance item that is easy to overlook is essential to your vehicle: the tires. Your trucks' tires are the one thing connecting you to the road and should be taken care of to ensure your safety and the comfort of your ride. Continue reading below to learn more about some of the tire maintenance services we perform here at the National Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram service center and how you can best take care of your tires.

Check your tire tread

The tread of your tires is what helps maintain your truck's grip on the road in all weather conditions. The deeper the tread of your tires, the better grip you'll have. If you don't have a tread depth reader, you can inspect your tire's tread depth using a penny. To do so, place it in the grooves of each tire's road surface with Lincoln's head upright. If you can only see the top of Lincoln's head, you still have good tread life left. However, if you can see more than half of Lincoln's head, it's time to start looking at new tires.

Routine tire services

There are a few ways to ensure your driving safety and extend the life of your tires. These include tire rotations, balancing, and wheel alignments. Our service professionals recommend rotating your tires every 5,000 miles. An easy way to remember this is to simply request a tire rotation each time you get your oil changed. Due to the positioning of your truck's engine and transmission, the front tires often wear quicker than the rears, as most of the truck's weight is placed on the front axle. Rotating your tires front to back will even out the tread wear, thus extending the life of your tires. Balancing your tires helps ensure the tires are an even weight all the way around so that one section of tread doesn't wear faster than the other. Having tires that are out of balance can also cause a vibration. Your wheels' alignment affects the path that your vehicle takes. However, tires that are out of alignment are susceptible to premature and uneven tread wear to the inner and outer sides of the tire's road surface.

Check your tire pressure

Although it is frequently overlooked, the air pressure in your tires can also affect the tread wear. All modern Ram trucks have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). This system uses sensors inside the tires that measure the tire's air pressure in pounds per square inch (PSI). If the pressure dips below a specific PSI, a light on your dashboard will be illuminated. If you're not sure of the tire pressure required for your truck, you can find it inside the owner's manual or on the placard inside the driver's door jamb. Over or under-inflated tires can cause the tires to wear unevenly and prematurely, causing you to replace the tires sooner than would otherwise be necessary. Even if the dashboard light isn't on, simply checking your tire pressure once per month can help save you from uneven tread wear.
