Importance of an Oil Change

Written by National Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram

Getting an oil change is one of the simplest and most important things you can do to keep your vehicle healthy. We know that things can get busy and you might not have time to get regular oil changes, but they are important to help you avoid a lot of expensive repairs later on. There has been some confusion about oil changes, but we here at National Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram want to clear things up a bit. Below you will find some information about when to change your motor oil, how often you should change it, and what's the best oil for your vehicle.

When should I get my oil changed?

If you are unsure when to get your oil changed, you should always consult your owner's manual. You should always keep your owner's manual on hand as it's a handy guide to proper maintenance for your vehicle. Though you can always head down to National Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram and our expert mechanics can answer this question for you as well. Today's vehicles usually have service reminder monitors that will alert drivers when they need to change their oil. Make sure that you get your oil changed as soon as possible when you get this alert.

When do I need to check my oil level?

Make sure that you always keep an eye on your oil levels as they might need to be topped off between changes. Consult your owner's manual and follow the recommendations set by your automaker, though it's recommended that you check your oil level at least once a month. Newer vehicles usually have electronic oil monitors instead of a dipstick for manual inspection. If you have a dipstick and you have to check your oil yourself make sure your car is parked on level ground and be careful not to poke any hotspots. If your oil is below the minimum mark, you're going to need to add some oil. Be sure to also check the color of your oil as it should not have a light or milky color as that means that some coolant has leaked in. Check for metal particles as well as that could mean internal engine damage. If you have either of these two conditions, head down to National Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram immediately for an oil change.

How often should I change my oil?

Though most will swear by the "every 3,000 miles or every three months" rule, there have been several advances in engines and oil over the years that might alter those numbers a little bit. Some automakers have made oil-change intervals at 7,500 or 10,000 miles with a duration of 6 to 12 months at a time. If you have a newer vehicle you can actually save money by changing your oil every 7,500 miles as opposed to 3,000. If you tend not to drive your car a lot, you'll still want to get an oil change at least twice a year to keep it fresh. The reason is oil gets less effective as it ages and if you don't keep your engine warm enough excess moisture can get in the engine and it's impossible to get it out. This can all lead to shorter engine life.

What oil is best for my vehicle?

The best way to answer this question is to once again look at your owner's manual. In most newer vehicles, the weight of your car's motor oil will be printed on the cap where you add the oil. If you have an older vehicle or are still not sure, be sure to stop by National Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram and our experts will easily be able to tell you which kind of oil is best for your vehicle.
